The movie doesn't necessarily have to be good, it just has to have a great cast.

The Godfather I and II had a great cast obviously. Without all the awesome 70s actors those movies wouldn't be the classics that they are, as evidenced by Part III.
Apocalypse Now and the Conversation, Coppola's other classic 70s movies, also had awesome casts. As do other movies from that era like Deer Hunter, Taxi Driver, Dog Day Afternoon, American Graffitti.
How the hell John Cazale never won an oscar before he died I'll never understand
